About This Product

Florida Limestone Artificial Reef Systems

The first Florida Limestone artificial reef was deployed in 2007 after three years of development and testing. Designed for Florida’s coastal waters, this reef system combines marine engineering with Florida limestone rock to better replicate the chemistry and structure of a natural reef ecosystem.

Natural Florida Limestone Composition

Florida limestone is formed from ancient clamshell deposits, creating a substrate that closely matches a natural reef in both pH and surface texture. This compatibility helps marine organisms attach and grow more readily than on standard artificial reef materials.

Patented Limestone Integration Process

We developed a patented process that embeds Florida limestone rock directly into the surface of a reinforced concrete reef structure. While plain concrete can have a slightly different pH than seawater, Florida limestone rock enhances the reef structure by increasing surface diversity, promoting improved settlement and colonization.

Engineered for Florida Storm Conditions

Each Florida Limestone artificial reef is a 6,000-pound concrete structure engineered to withstand storm events, strong currents, and surge conditions common in the Gulf of Mexico. The 10-foot footprint is designed to help prevent settling and scouring on the seafloor.

Surface Area, Complexity, and Marine Life Attraction

Embedded limestone rock increases total surface area and structural complexity, which are key factors for attracting fish, supporting reef biodiversity, and encouraging long-term habitat growth.
