About This Product

The Marine Matrix is a five-foot-tall, marine-engineered artificial reef structure designed to maximize habitat complexity, structural durability, and ecological productivity. Constructed from marine-grade concrete and engineered with multi-tiered internal cavities, this modular reef unit provides an effective footprint-to-weight ratio that helps prevent subsidence.

These characteristics provide essential habitat and refuge for commercially and recreationally important fish species and their associated forage fish.

With compact dimensions of 60 inches x 60 inches x 60 inches and a solid bottom, the Marine Matrix delivers exceptional biological performance while remaining cost-effective to manufacture, transport, and deploy.

Design Features

Multi-Tier Habitat Architecture

The structure incorporates four vertically stacked cavities on each side, with large openings and interconnected internal passageways. This design supports the separation of juvenile and adult fish, creates predator-and-prey refuge dynamics, and increases biomass aggregation.

Complete Flow-Through Design

Openings on all sides allow continuous water movement throughout the structure, enhancing oxygenation, nutrient transport, and larval recruitment.

High Structural Complexity

With a 57 percent void ratio, the module provides macro-habitat for large fish and other mobile species, mid-scale refuge for snapper, grouper, crustaceans, and similar species, and micro-surface attachment areas for sponges, algae, oysters, and other organisms.

Materials and Durability

The Marine Matrix is constructed from low-permeability, sulfate-resistant marine concrete and engineered for long-term deployment in harsh marine environments.

Its rough, uncoated surface promotes rapid colonization by coral, where applicable, as well as barnacles, bivalves, sponges, and other benthic organisms. No coatings or contaminants are used, supporting full environmental compliance.

Deployment and Handling

The Marine Matrix is engineered for handling with forklift equipment or lifting slings and can be deployed using a barge, crane, or tilt-bed equipment. Its stable base geometry helps minimize movement on the seabed, making it suitable for deployment at all depths.

Applications

The Marine Matrix is suitable for state and federal artificial reef programs, fisheries enhancement for snapper, grouper, and other species, and coastal restoration and mitigation initiatives, including Natural Resource Damage Assessment projects. It can also support recreational diving, ecotourism, oyster habitat, and other benthic habitat development projects.
